To achieve the ultimate in home safety preparation, make sure that your kitchen is stocked with a fire extinguisher. I know first hand that home accidents do happen and it is always best to be prepared. A co-worker of mine recently had the misfortune of not being prepared when she needed to be. She was cooking dinner when she got distracted by her two year old daughter. In the time frame of just a few seconds a grease fire started while she was distracted. When she turned back toward her stove, she was greeted by strong flames along the bottom of her skillet. The flames quickly spread to the wall behind her stove. She panicked and tried to throw water to extinguish the flames.
The problem is that water makes a grease fire stronger. She had to gather her daughter and call the fire department from the driveway. By the time the fire department arrived a significant amount of damage had been done to her kitchen, luckily the rest of the house was unharmed. If she would have kept a fire extinguisher in her kitchen she could have avoided facing fire damage to her home. The extinguisher would have smothered the flames and saved her kitchen. The fire damage in her kitchen has been completely repaired and she now keeps several extinguishers throughout her home.
