I own the infamous Sigma 50-500mm lens which is also known as Bigma and this Tamron 200-500 lens. I use both of them with my Canon EOS 5D DSLR camera. On my observation, I noticed that the Tamron is not a true 200-500 lens. I record that the Tamron will only give you a 200mm to 486mm focal length. I did some tests to see if whether Tamron or Bigma is the longer zoom. I used a tripod and I focused on the same subject. It was very obvious that the Tamron’s reach is only 486mm. The Bigma at the very most is 450mm or it can even be shorter at 440mm. If you are comparing the Tamron and the Bigma, you should consider this point. I personally like the Tamron better because it will give you more aperture than the Bigma. I also think that the image quality of the Tamron is better due to the restricted zoom range.

I really was not sure how much of an improvement this Canon 24mm 1.4 II would be over the original version of this lens. However, as someone who does a lot of low light and night photography, I wanted to get a sharper lens that has less chromatic aberration as well. It turns out that this lens does not disappoint. The center of the frame is much sharper below f/2.8 than the original version.

After f/2.8, they are very similar in every regard though. It is particularly improved at the f/1.4 aperture. It is sharper farther on the corners at all apertures relative to the original version. This version has virtually no chromatic aberration which is a substantial improvement over the original version of the lens. This lens has excellent contrast even wide open. This will give the images more pop than the original version. I would say everything is very good on this upgrade.

There is not much mentioned about the distortion control in this Tamron 70-200 review. So, I decided to take the time to discuss further about the distortion in this Tamron 70-200mm lens. If you are new to the photography world, distortion is simply an optical defect that makes a straight line bent.

This can be a problem when you are shooting architecture photography. You simply do not want a building to look bent. To test the distortion, I went out and shot some brick walls. The brick walls have straight lines so it was easy to test the distortion via this method.

After doing the testing, I can assure you that the distortion on this lens is non-existent. While this might be because this is a telephoto lens, I personally think that this is because Tamron really put some thought into controlling the distortion correctly. Well done and great job Tamron!
